Fairy silhouette and quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black fairy silhouette with pale, translucent wings sits above the handwritten script words "Believe in yourself" on the inner forearm near the wrist. The silhouette is solid black with soft grey shading in the wings, and the lettering is a thin black cursive line. The image is a close, straight-on shot against a shiny silver background, with the design centred on the skin.

The fairy came down Mrs Tully's chimney on a wet Thursday in March, when the coal had gone out and the kettle had gone cold. She landed on the fender with a sound like a dropped thimble, dusted soot from her wings, and looked up at Edith Parr, who was standing at the sink with her hands in the washing-up water and her face wet from crying.

Edith had burnt the Sunday loaves again. Her mother had said it was the third time that month, and her father had said nothing at all, which was worse. The fairy sat on the rim of the mantel clock and swung her bare feet and said she had seen worse bakers in Coldharbour Lane, though she could not name one.

All that spring the fairy followed Edith about. She sat on the bus shelter while Edith queued for the Friday fish, and on the wall of the Methodist hall while Edith sang alone in the back row. She tapped her wand against the oven door once, and it did nothing that anyone could see, but Edith kept her hands steady and turned the loaves at the right minute, and in May the bread rose high and brown and the whole street smelled of it.

When the swallows came back, the fairy was gone. On the back window of the kitchen, in the frost of a cold morning, someone had written a line in a looping, careful hand. Edith breathed on the glass and watched the letters disappear, then breathed again so they came back, and she did this every winter until the house was sold.
