Love yourself script on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of the phrase "love yourself" written in a thin, flowing cursive script across the wrist. The linework is fine and even, in solid black ink with no shading or colour. The lettering runs horizontally across the centre of the frame against a light skin tone and a wooden background.

Cook Mabry kept the galley clean enough to eat from, which on the Lark was no small thing. Every Sunday she took a fine steel awl to the underside of the big copper pan and scratched the same words into it, letters so thin the boys had to tilt the pan to the lamp to read them. Love yourself, it said. The boys laughed at it for a month, then stopped, because there was nothing else on that ship anyone was asked to do for themselves.

Young Tobin, who carried the water and burned the bread, asked her why she bothered. Nobody reads the bottom of a pan, he said. Mabry told him the pan was not for reading. It was for the one who scrubbed it at the end of a long watch, with split knuckles and the sea slopping over the sill, who needed to find something kind waiting under the grease.
The winter the Lark was caught off the Horn, the crew went three weeks on hard biscuit and salt pork. Tobin was the one who gave his share to the smaller boys. Mabry found him at the stove one night, scrubbing the copper with sand and muttering the words to himself, because he had learned them without meaning to. She took the pan from him, set it on the fire until it glowed, then turned it over so the letters faced the lamp.
She ladled the first soup into his bowl and told him to eat it while it was hot. He did, and it was the best soup the Lark ever made.
