Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo spells out the words Believe in yourself in a flowing script, with Be and Y in red and the remaining letters in dark ink. The linework is smooth and bold, with the lettering running diagonally across the skin. The photo is taken close up with a warm, slightly soft focus on the skin around the design.

Ada Pringle had never once said a kind word to a deckhand in eleven years, so I took the scrap as a joke at my expense. Then the gear snagged on the wreck off Flamborough and the winch cable began to sing, and Skipper Haddow sent me down to clear it because I was the lightest and the only one not frightened of the dark. I went down the ladder with the paper folded between my teeth.
It took an hour. The cable came free all at once, the net came up heavy with cod, and when I climbed back out the men stood in a line at the rail looking at me as though I'd walked on the water. Nobody said anything. Ada was ashore, of course, and would never know. Haddow only nodded and tossed me a dry jumper.
That night I wrote the words on the inside of my locker door in red pencil, the B and the Y first, and left the rest for whoever came aboard after me.
