Believe script tattoo with a star

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo spells the word Believe in a flowing cursive script, with a small five-pointed star outline above the final letters. The linework is clean and even in solid black ink, with no shading or colour. The photograph is a close, angled view of the skin, with the lettering running diagonally across the frame against a dark background.

Nell Ashby had been up the ladder since six, and the canvas banner for the final Dorking date lay over two trestles behind the cookhouse. Her father had lettered the word in gold forty years ago, and the paint had flaked to a dull grey. She had brought a pot of size, a fine brush and the last of the black ink from the ticket office.

The council's letter had arrived on Tuesday, saying the field would be cleared by the end of the month. Nobody spoke about it at supper. Old Pim, who had walked the high wire since before the war, sat on the step of the horsebox mending a bridle and watched the lamps come on across the grass, one for each pitch they would not keep.

She worked the curve of the B slowly, the way her father had shown her, lifting the brush before every join so the stroke would not blot. When she reached the final e she stopped. The star that should have hung above the letters had gone entirely, and there was no gold left in the tin. She drew it in black instead, five points, a little uneven, the way a child draws a star on a school book.

Pim came over with his tea and looked up at the banner for a long time. "Bit mean, that," he said, but he was smiling. In the morning they hung it over the gate, and the first car on the lane slowed as it passed, as though someone had asked it to.
