Believe script on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a thin black script word, believe, tattooed diagonally across the inner wrist. The linework is fine and even, with the letters joined in a flowing cursive style and no shading. The skin is light and the background is out of focus green grass, which keeps attention on the lettering.

Dear Tom, the trams stopped at half eleven, so I walked the long way past the canal with the rain coming in sideways, and I kept thinking about your kitchen table buried under revision cards. Mum says you haven't eaten properly since Monday. Eat the toast, even if it's cold.

I found Gran's fountain pen in the drawer behind the till, the one she used for birthday cards, and on the back of the spare receipt pad I wrote the word Believe. I joined each letter to the next the way she taught us on the church newsletter, the loops leaning like they were tired of standing up straight. Then I wrote it again, smaller, in case the first one looked like a shout.

Mr Okafor came through from the back at one in the morning with a flask and read it upside down over my shoulder. He said a word on paper is only a wish until someone reads it aloud, so I read it aloud to the empty shop, then to the window. A delivery driver outside gave two short honks, which I've decided counts.

I'm posting you the page. Don't pin it above the desk where you'll stare at it at three in the morning. Tuck it inside the front of your maths book, where the margin is wide and the paper is thin, so you'll find it when the exam paper goes blank. Love, Nell. P.S. Eat the toast.
