Believe script with three birds on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads the word Believe in a flowing cursive script, with a long tail on the final letter. Three small solid black birds fly upward from the end of the lettering towards the top right of the frame. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the lettering is set diagonally across the forearm, with the birds sitting in the upper right corner.

The gulls have gone inland again, which Mother says means rain, though she said the same about the gulls last Tuesday and we got nothing but a fishy sort of drizzle. I am writing on the back of the tithe ledger because the Harbourmaster took my good paper for the bridge accounts, so forgive the smudges.
You will want news of the bell. They hung it at last in the new tower at Carrow, the one the king's men pulled down twice before the mortar would hold. On the morning they raised it the whole town stood in the square with its hands over its ears, and the word painted above the arch, BELIEVE, looked so small I thought the painter had run out of room. Old Tamsin said it was a foolish word to carve over a bell that only rings for funerals. I told her a bell rings for whatever the town decides it is ringing for.
Now the part I promised. Last night I climbed up to check the clapper, and three birds came in through the louvres, the small black sort that nest in the cliff. They circled the rope twice, then went out over the roofs, climbing and climbing as if the sky were a staircase. I stood there a long while with the lantern guttering. I thought of you on the packet boat, leaving the harbour, and I thought, she will be looking back at the tower too, and she will see nothing but the light.
I have kept the spare key to the tower in my coat. Come home when the ice is out, and we will ring it together, badly, the way we used to.
Your brother, Aldo
