Believe script with birds on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single word, Believe, is written in flowing black cursive script across the inner forearm, with a long tail on the final letter. Four small bird silhouettes in solid black sit around the lettering, with three to the lower left and upper right. The linework is thin and even, the ink is dark black and grey on pale skin, and the word sits diagonally across the frame.

She had kept racing pigeons on the headland above Scarborough for forty years, and she knew the habits of a bird better than most people knew their neighbours. Four of her best hens had not come home from the Bridlington race in June. The club had written them off. Ada had never written anything off in her life.

Her grandson Tom, eleven and sulky about being sent up the hill, said it was the wind or the gulls. Ada didn't argue. Behind the loft, on a board nailed to the fence, someone had painted the same word in black, and beneath it four small birds sat on a line as if waiting for a signal to lift.

She tipped the seed into the trough and waited. The sky over the cliff stayed empty until it didn't, and then there were four dark shapes dropping out of the sun, rings still bright on their legs, coming straight down to her as though they had never been gone at all.
