Believe script with heart on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand raised against a textured white background, showing the word Believe in black script with a small outlined heart at its end on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The tattoo sits diagonally across the wrist, with the hand and blue patterned nails filling the upper part of the frame.

The 6.40 to Carlisle was already sighing on Platform Four when Nell Achterberg pushed through the lost-property door, out of breath and asking for an umbrella that did not exist. I had the kettle on and the ledger open. There was nothing grey with a broken spoke, only a single glove that someone had folded into a neat square and left behind the hatch, as if it were waiting for a claim.

She asked what I meant to do about the timetable, and I pointed at the card pinned above the hatch, where a previous clerk had written in thin black script: Believe it. The next one is always coming. Nell laughed, properly, the way people only laugh at a stranger's handwriting. She said her grandfather had pinned cards like that on every station he ever worked, and he had done the Settle line for forty years without once missing a connection he had promised anyone.
We sat on the bench while the 6.40 pulled out without us. She told me about the years he spent painting signs for the platforms, how he tilted each letter so it would read from the far end of the concourse. I thought of my own careful, uneven capitals on a hundred claim slips, and how I had never once trusted a train to wait for me.
She took the glove, then reached past me and pinned a fresh card above the hatch. Her word was small and slanted, with a heart at the end drawn in one unbroken line. Down the track the next train was already rounding the bend, and for once I did not look at the board.
