Ohana script with heart on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine-line script tattoo reads Ohana on the inner forearm, with a small heart drawn as a flourish above the final letter. The linework is thin, even and dark, with no shading or fill. The black and white photograph shows a hand resting near the wrist, with a knitted sweater sleeve in the background.

Nobody in Hollin Row had ever heard the word, so Nell Harker had to explain it twice to the rent man. It was her husband's, brought home from the Pacific in a seaman's kitbag by his brother Frank, who never came back up the Tyne. The pit had closed in March. By October the terraces were half empty, and the boy had been sitting on her back step for three nights before she asked his name. Danny Rourke, he said, and then, because he was twelve and too proud to cry, he told her his father's boots were still under the stairs at his mother's, and nobody had the heart to throw them out. Nell put the kettle on and kept her face turned to the window.
When the rent man called on Friday she wrote Danny into the lodgers' column in her looping hand, then drew a small heart above the last letter, the way she marked the coal tallies. The man squinted at it and asked what the scribble was. She told him it meant nobody got left behind, and he shrugged and took the shilling.
That night Danny found the word pencilled inside the cupboard door where Frank had written it years before. He copied it onto the soft skin of his own wrist with the biro from his school bag, the letters thin and wobbling. Nell watched from the range and said nothing, because he had already done the thing she had been waiting for, which was to decide he belonged there.
