A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags had the sign-writer's brush in her teeth when the Ferris wheel gave its first groan of the morning, and she took it out to say what she thought of the wind. The lettering on the Gallant Brothers' Hoopla stall had flaked to nothing over the winter in Hull, and Dad had left her a pot of black enamel, a roll of masking tape and a fresh board with the words written in pencil on it. She had not believed much of anything since the spring he went into the infirmary, but the old man had never once asked her to believe the words, only to paint them. So she worked the flourish of the capital A the way he had taught her, wrist loose, breath held, the line thinning at the top and swelling on the downstroke. The fairground hands came past with their sleeves rolled and their tea in tins, and Tomasz, who ran the coconut shies, stopped to read it aloud in a voice that made it sound like a threat.

By dusk the board was hung above the hoopla counter, the bulbs strung along its edge and the first punters already jingling coins on the wood. Mags climbed down the ladder with enamel on her knuckles and looked up. The letters ran slightly uphill, as he always let them, so the eye followed them towards the lights. She dipped the brush once more and signed her own small initials in the corner, where nobody would think to look.
