Infinity symbol with birds and Believe
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a thin black outline of an infinity symbol, with a small heart formed in its centre, three bird silhouettes flying above the left loop and the word Believe written in cursive script to the right. The linework is fine and even, with solid black fill on the birds and lettering. The design is shown in close, slightly soft focus against plain, warm-toned skin.

Sit down, sit down, the soup won't go cold faster than I can talk, and I've only got the one voice left so you'll all have to lean in for the bit with the geese. Now, the road out past Hollin Dyke looped twice round the reservoir, the way a stitch goes round a button, and it always brought a man back to the same stile no matter which way he set off. Tom Ashby found that out the hard way the winter he went up to measure the peat for the Hallam family. Every time he reached the crossing, where the two loops met in a little heart of wet ground, three grey geese would lift off the water and fly over him in a long, lazy figure of eight, and every time he lost his bearings entirely.

Mary Ashby waited at the lower gate with a lantern and a pot of lamp oil she'd bought off the travelling man in Keld. She did not go up after him. Her mother had told her that a road like that only lets a person through when someone on the near side keeps saying the one true thing, so each dusk she stood at the gate and called out the word Believe, plain as bread, over and over, until the wind carried it up the slope. Some nights the geese came back and settled on the reservoir. Some nights they didn't. On the ninth night Tom walked down the wrong side of the water, came out at the gate, and sat in the mud laughing like a boy.
They were married that spring, and the geese came back early to watch, which Mary always said was the only sensible thing a bird had ever done. So when you walk out tonight, mind the crossing by the gate, and look up. If three birds go over, that's the road telling you it's still open. Now pass the bread down to Eileen, and somebody fetch the fiddler, because I haven't finished and I never intend to.
