Believe script with mouse ears

Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo

The photo shows the word Believe in black cursive script on skin, with a looped flourish that encircles a mouse ears silhouette. The lettering uses bold, smooth strokes with solid black ink. The ears are shaded in purple, which is the only colour in the design, and the tattoo is centred against a plain pinkish skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp room at Hollin Colliery smelled of paraffin and wet wool, and Walter Dunn had been rubbing the same brass check tag for ten minutes when young Stanley Pryce came in with a paper bag from the Co-op and a face like a wet Sunday.

Inside the bag was a felt hat with two round ears, cut from a purple remnant his mother had kept since the Coronation. He had won it at the fair on the rec, knocking three tins off a wall with a wooden ball, and he had carried it all the way up Pit Lane like a summons. His father had called the fair a waste of a shilling. Nothing down the shaft was luck, his father said, only men, timber and the roof holding or not holding.

Walter turned the hat over in his big scarred hands. He had heard that speech before, from better men, and most of them were dead now. He hooked the ears over a nail beside the lamp rack, where the light from the high window caught the purple and made it look almost warm. Above the door, someone had chalked a word on a slate, the way the shift boss's boy did every Monday for want of anything better to write. It was still there. Nobody had rubbed it out.

"Your dad's right about timber," Walter said. "He's wrong about the hat."

Stanley looked at the ears, then at the slate, then at the cage bell through the wall. He said nothing, but he stopped chewing his lip. When the bell rang for the six o'clock men, he picked up his lamp and went out without the bag, and the purple ears kept watch over the rack until morning.
