Belle and Beast silhouette with rose and script

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a line drawing of a woman in profile, with the outline of a beast behind her, beside a rose with a green stem and faint pink petals. Beneath the artwork, the words Tale as old as time are written in black cursive script. The thin black linework is set against the skin in a close, centred crop of the upper back.

Shush now, and mind the sawdust, it's all the big top we've got left. Sit close. You've heard the one about the lion who wouldn't roar? No? Then you've been sat too near the candyfloss.

Harrow's Travelling Marvel had one lion left by 1961, an old thing called Caesar with a mane gone the colour of weak tea. Every night he sat on his stool while the band wheezed through the same waltz, and every night Alfie Pike, the ringmaster, paid him in cold chips and told him he was magnificent. One wet Thursday in Keighley, a girl walked in out of the rain with a single red rose wrapped in yesterday's newspaper. She'd come to run the till, she said, and she'd work for nothing if the lion could keep his own supper.

Nobody ran a till for nothing in those days, but Alfie was too tired to argue. So she took the money tin, counted it twice, and found the cruel bit: the show owed the feed merchant forty pounds and the council three times that. She sold the lorry. She sold the calliope. She kept the rose in a jam jar on the ticket booth, and when rain came through the canvas she stitched the holes with her own hair ribbon, humming the waltz all wrong.

The last night, the tent was half empty, and Caesar, who had never once been asked, stood up off his stool. He walked to the centre of the ring, lay down beside the jar, and let the girl rest her hand in his mane. Alfie swore the lion was roaring. Nobody in the seats heard a thing. Next morning the lorry was gone, the girl was gone, and the rose was still standing in its jar, as red as the day it was cut. Mind your feet on the way out. There's a pale oval in the sawdust where something big lay down for a very long time.
