Crescent moon and black cat on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A crescent moon with a woman's face in profile fills most of the frame, with a black cat sitting on the lower curve of the moon. Dotted chains with blue-tinted beads and drops hang beneath it, and small sparkle stars sit in the background. The linework is clean and the shading is soft grey, with blue used only on the beads and drops.

The snow had shut the Hollin Road for nine days, and at the Crooked Hart there was nothing left to burn but the old settle. Mara Dunning kept the fire going on the last of the ash and counted her guests: a carter, two drovers, and a widow who would not give her name. The black cat, Soot, sat on the mantel and watched the window, where the moon hung low over the frozen mere like a paring of cheese.

On the ninth night the moon came down. Not all of it, only a thin silver shoulder that rested on the ridge beyond the yard, and the carter swore he saw a face in it, eyes shut and mouth soft, as if it were dreaming of a kiss. Soot went to the door and sat on the sill with her tail curled round her feet. The widow said the moon had once courted Soot's grandmother, and that the cat had been too proud to answer.
Mara took down the beaded chain her mother had strung from the lintel to keep out the draughts, blue glass drops that clicked whenever the door moved. She carried it out into the drift and laid it across the lower curve of the moon the way one lays a necklace on a sleeping girl. The cold bit her hands raw. The moon let out a long breath, and the snow stopped falling in the same moment.
By morning the road was clear and the drovers had gone. The chain hung on its nail again as if it had never left. The widow was gone too, and the carter could not say when he had last seen her. Soot lay in the cold ash, licking frost from her paws, and on the windowsill someone had left a single silver hair.
