Old Ewan at the harbour still tells the story of the girl from Sgeir who walked up to the shieling to fetch her brother home from the grey man's house. The grey man was no more a beast than you or I, only lonely and hopeless at conversation, and two hundred years of telling have made him worse than he ever was. When I was small I thought it was a story about manners. Now I think it is about the long winter a person spends waiting for someone to stop being frightening.

Ewan says the girl stayed until the snow lay past the windows. She learned to read his handwriting, which was appalling, and he learned to make bread that did not bounce off the table. In spring she went down to the boat and left a red rose standing in a jar of brackish water on his sill. When she came back at midsummer, the petals had not dropped a single one. Ewan says that is the part nobody tells, because it spoils the shape of the story.
