Fine line French script on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A thin line of handwritten French script runs diagonally across the upper chest, close to the collarbone and neckline. The linework is delicate and even, with the letters rendered in dark ink and no visible shading. The soft, blurred background and a navy top at the lower edge frame the small tattoo against pale skin.

The flour is still settling on the zinc counter when Madame Ferrand slides a folded card beside your scales and asks, in the French she saves for early mornings, whether you still have the good pen. She wants a line copied out exactly, and she has already tried it three times on the back of a receipt, crossing out each attempt.

Outside, the streetlamp on Harrow Row buzzes and flickers. The ovens are at heat and the air smells of scorched butter and yeast. You bend over the card and write slowly, the way your grandmother taught you when your hands were too big for a pen. Toi qui es l'objet de... You stop at the last word and ask whether she means what you think she means. She laughs, a short surprised sound, and says she has never once meant anything so plainly.
You blot the ink with a corner of tissue, slide the card into a paper sleeve tucked under the baguettes, and take her coins one by one while she counts them twice. She leaves before the sky turns, the bell over the door jangling behind her, and you forget to tell her the bread is on the house.
When the window goes grey, you find the receipt she dropped in the bin with its three crossed-out drafts. You smooth it flat and keep it, because the crossings out are the only honest part. Then the first tray comes out of the oven, and you set it on the rack, listening to the croissants crackle as they cool.
