Bender in an ornate gold frame on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a grey cartoon robot with a black top hat, red hatband and round monocle on a chain, looking sideways with a grimacing mouth. It sits inside an ornate gold scrolled frame on a pale teal background. The bold black outlines and smooth colour fills give it a clean, classic finish, with the frame filling most of the upper arm.

The snow had sealed the Greyfell pass by Tuesday, and by Thursday the portrait on the upstairs landing had started to look smug. It hung between the linen cupboard and the door of Room Nine, a tin gentleman in a black top hat with a red band, a monocle on a chain, his mouth set in a grimace of disapproval. Marjorie Platt, who kept the inn's books in pencil and retired to Torquay in October, had told you the frame came with the building and that nobody knew who the gentleman was.

Each night you carry the lamp up the stairs and he has turned a little further towards the cupboard where the good brandy lives. On the fourth night a brass key lies on the windowsill, warm as if someone had just put it down. Its bow is stamped with a tiny cog. You do not want to believe it opens anything, but the cellar door has a lock nobody has used since the war, and the key slides in as if it had been waiting.
Down among the barrels sits a crate marked in Marjorie's careful pencil: Not for the gentleman. Inside, wrapped in newspaper from 1961, is a single bottle and a card that reads, He only wants to be asked. So you carry it up, pour two glasses by the landing window, and set one on the sill in front of the frame. Outside, the snow keeps coming down through the lamplight.
Behind you the boiler knocks, the monocle swings on its chain, and the grimace has gone. You are almost sure of it. He is grinning, and you suspect this is the first time in a hundred years anyone has offered him a drink he did not have to steal.
