Mum says the broom came from a jumble sale in Halifax and cost forty pence, which was more than I was ever allowed to spend on anything. Its orange handle had been painted with a tin of gloss meant for the back fence. I kept it behind the coats in the hall, where the hoover could not reach, and every Saturday I let Priya Nair watch on the condition that she never told Mr Adeyemi at number nine.

The snitch was the real problem. Priya had found it in a Christmas cracker, a gold plastic ball with two wings glued on the wrong way round, and it had spent a month in my blazer pocket. The plan was simple. I would drop it from the top of the stairs and see whether it could be made to go anywhere useful. It rolled under the radiator instead. Dad lay on the carpet for twenty minutes with a torch, muttering words he assumed I could not hear.

On the last Saturday before the house sold, I climbed on the broom in the back garden and rose a whole foot before the shed roof stopped me. Priya clapped. The graze on my shin looked like a small map of somewhere I had been, and the broom went into the removal van with the rest of the furniture.

On moving day I found the snitch still in my coat pocket, so I tossed it over the hedge into Mr Adeyemi's garden. I like to think someone under the age of ten is still hunting for it there.
