Minion holding a blue furry puppet

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon minion character with one large eye, a blue hat and red straps stands beside a blue furry creature with an orange horn, which it holds on a stick. The outlines are thick and dark, with flat blocks of yellow, blue and orange and soft shading on the grey metal parts. The design fills most of the frame against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Third hour of the night shift at the Dover booth, and the blue furry thing on the stick was still staring at me. Its eyes were the size of coasters and its orange horn looked like a traffic cone someone had sat on. The driver, Owen Pask, said it was for his nephew. He had declared a tent, two bottles of gin and a puppet, in that order, which in my experience is the order of a man who has rehearsed.

I took the puppet to check its seams, and that's when I met its friend. The yellow fellow stuck to its back was all one eye, a dinner plate of white with a black pupil, a grey dome on top and goggles pushed up as if he'd just come off a motorbike. Red braces, a grin with two teeth, and a little orange lollipop of a tail dangling from his belt. He looked like someone who had never once filled in a form. Folded small inside the blue one's sleeve was a receipt from a shop in Ramsgate for two hundred pairs of novelty goggles.

Your nephew's party, I said. Owen studied the ceiling lights for a long moment. He's four, he said at last. He likes things that look back at you. I told him the puppet could go through, but the goggles were a different conversation, and I wrote the receipt number on my pad and stamped the orange horn with a red PASSED.

The last thing I saw in the wing mirror was the puppet raised in the van window, waving at me with its tiny hand, the yellow fellow beside it grinning as if we had all got away with something.
