Bender from Futurama on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon robot character stands with a beer bottle in one hand and a cigar in his mouth, while his other arm holds out a fan of banknotes. The linework is bold and outlined, with flat grey shading on the metal body and small areas of yellow, orange, red and green. The figure is centred on the lower leg, with a partly visible tattoo at the left edge and a hand resting at the top of the frame.

Dear Pauline,

You'd have died laughing at Gary Pilling at the reunion. Thirty years since he was sent out of Harcourt Grammar for setting the chemistry lab on fire, and there he was by the raffle table, tie pulled loose, a bottle of something brown and cheap in one fist and an unlit cigar wedged in his grin. He still walked like a tin man who'd swallowed a fruit machine, all clank and swagger, and he kept telling everyone about the scrapyard fortune he was about to make.
Then he fanned out a wad of notes to buy the whole room a round. Twenty pounds, fifty, a bunch of tenners, all crisp and green. Dougie behind the bar held one up to the light and read across the top in very small letters: Bank of Nowhere, Not Legal Tender. Gary just laughed that big metal laugh and said the joke was on whoever had been daft enough to take his Eastfield plans seriously.
Mr Dobbs, the old caretaker who still carries his keys like a weapon, came over and took the notes off him one by one. Nobody was arrested. Gary was put in charge of the raffle instead, which was probably the worst decision anyone has made since the chemistry lab.
I keep thinking about the way he stood there, grinning at a room full of people who'd known him at fourteen, holding up a fistful of nothing as if it were gold. Some people never stop being the boy with the cigar behind the bike sheds. I suppose that's a kind of loyalty.
Love, Carol
