Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A vintage style bicycle is drawn in thin black linework with fine hatched detail on the spokes and frame. Three small hearts, shaded with hatching, float above the front of the bicycle. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, set against a plain white background, with the bicycle filling the right side of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bicycle came up the pass in pieces, strapped to a mule that disliked it, and Teodor put it back together on the kitchen table of the high inn while his wife held the lamp. Nobody in Cwm Ystrad had seen a wheel with so many spokes. Teodor said a postman on two wheels could cross the col in a morning if the road was dry and his heart was light. The village laughed, because the road was never dry, and a heart was the one thing a man could not keep light for long.

So he went up with the post anyway. Letters rode in a wicker basket over the front wheel, tied with red wool. People in the valley began writing more than they had ever written, because the bicycle came back every week and never once lost a letter to the snow. Some envelopes were sealed with a drop of wax pressed into the shape of a heart, and Teodor learned to tell by the weight of a letter whether it held good news or only a long apology.

In the eleventh winter a letter came for the far side of the pass, addressed in a hand he did not know, with no name at all, only a heart drawn in pencil. He tied it to the handlebars with the others. The wind came down off the snowfield and he pedalled hard into it, the wool slipped, and three small paper hearts broke loose and rose above the front wheel as if they had somewhere to be.

He walked the bicycle back down that evening and did not see where they went. Two days later a woman came down from the far side with a walking stick and a sack of salt, asking whether a postman had passed her way. She said there was a window on her side of the col that had not been lit since the spring, and that three hearts had come to rest on her sill like moths.
