Bicycle with hearts on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

A fine line tattoo of a bicycle with a wicker-style basket sits on the inside of the ankle, with a few small musical notes near the rear wheel. Several small pink hearts float above the handlebars and basket, adding the only colour to the otherwise black linework. The photo is taken from above and slightly to the side, with the ankle filling the centre of the frame and a tattoo machine at the left edge.

Dear Marguerite,

I got the bike back from Hollis on Thursday, and he has fitted a new basket, woven wicker with a bit of chicken wire underneath so the wet oranges stop falling through the gaps. You would have laughed. The man set it on the stand and looked at me as if I'd asked him to shoe a horse. Anyway, it rides beautifully now, though the back wheel still hums the same three notes whenever the spokes catch the kerb, the tune Dad whistled on Sunday mornings, which I have never once managed to finish.

The market was a drowned mess this week. Rain came in sideways off the river and the stallholders kept tipping their awnings to let the puddles slide off into the gutter. I sold out of the green tomatoes by eleven and spent the afternoon in the back of the fishmonger's, drinking his strong tea while he argued with the gulls. Nobody buys flowers in the wet, but a woman in a yellow mac did buy a bunch of sweet peas from the tin bucket by the door and asked me to tie a ribbon round them, so I did, and she left a pink paper heart folded under the ribbon, which I have pinned above my bench like a stupid schoolgirl.

I'm writing because I want you to come down on Saturday when it dries out. Bring the tandem if it's still in the shed. We could ride it along the towpath with the basket full of sweet peas and I could finally learn the rest of Dad's tune, or at least make up a version that ends properly.

Yours in damp socks, Ruth
