Small bicycle tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline of a bicycle with two spoked wheels, a frame, handlebars and a saddle, drawn in black ink. The linework is thin and even, with the wheels shaded lightly in places for depth. The pale skin and dark striped sweater sleeve create a simple, low-contrast composition with the tattoo near the centre right of the frame.

The last bicycle in Harrowgate Lock hung from a hook in the drying shed behind the eel market, by its saddle, like a ham nobody dared eat. Nobody had ridden it in forty years. Ines took it down on a Tuesday because the causeway was out and the post had to reach the far islands by noon, and because her grandmother, who had kept the shed before her, used to say a wheel tells you the truth about itself if you look at the spokes long enough.

Ines looked. The spokes were fine, thin and even, every one of them pulling the rim true. The frame had a hairline crack under the saddle clamp, and the handlebars wobbled when she lifted the thing onto the stones, but the chain still sat on its teeth, and that was the part her grandmother had worried about most. She oiled it with the last of the seal fat and wheeled it out into the grey before the tide turned.
The causeway ran three miles over black mud, with the sea breathing on either side. Ines pedalled badly at first, standing up on the pedals and then sitting down, finding a rhythm somewhere past the second marker post. Halfway across, a boy from the eel market came running after her, Tobin, eleven and furious about being left behind. She stopped. He climbed onto the crossbar without asking and gripped the handlebars as if they were a throne.
"Pedal," she said. "I'm not doing it all."
He did. For a while the two of them rode in a wobbling line through the mud, and the wheels threw wet grit in clean arcs behind them, and the light came up over the water so suddenly that both rims flashed silver at once. Tobin shouted something she couldn't hear over the wind. Ines laughed, the sack of letters bumped against her back, and the far islands were close enough now to see their lamps.
