Bicycle tattoo on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A black line drawing of a classic upright bicycle with a front basket, rear rack, saddle and two spoked wheels, shown in clean single-weight linework with no shading. The tattoo sits across the upper chest near the collarbone, with the wheels and frame spanning most of the frame's width. The photograph is black and white, with the soft focus of the skin and a dark top in the lower corner.

Ruth had carried the bicycle off the ferry herself because the deckhand said the crossing had shaken the chain loose and nobody on Inish Mor would fix it before Monday. The basket was already full of her mother's letters, bundled with string, meant for the shop at the top of the harbour road. She had not ridden a bike since she was fourteen. Her knees remembered it before she did.

The road ran past the peat stacks and the chapel with its roof half gone, and the wind came off the sound so hard it pushed the front wheel sideways. Every few hundred yards she stopped and looked back at the water, where the mainland had disappeared behind a grey wall of rain. Nobody on the island had asked why she had come. They had only pointed her to the empty cottage with the blue door and told her the saddle would need adjusting.
The shop was closed. A boy of about nine sat on the step with a tin of sweets, and he watched her lean the bicycle against the wall. "That's a basket for groceries," he said. "Not for letters." She told him that was what her mother used to say, and he considered this, then took one of the envelopes and read the address aloud, slowly, the way children read words they are not supposed to understand.
By evening the rain had cleared and the sea went flat and gold. Ruth rode the empty lane once more, no hands, wobbling between the stone walls, and when she reached the blue door she set the letters on the step, rang the bell that had long since rusted off its wire, and did not go in.
