Biohazard and arrows with slogan lettering
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A red biohazard symbol with dripping blood-like marks sits in the centre of the design, with three arrows with blue fletching passing through it. Bold black block lettering arcs above and below the symbol, reading FIGHT THE DEAD and FEAR THE LIVING. The design is filled with solid colour and has crisp outlines, and it is centred on a pale patch of skin.

Sit yourself nearer the fire, our Tom, and mind the coal dust on that bench. Right, you want the one about the Hollin shaft and the summer the water came up black. Nobody in Caddow will tell it straight any more, so I will.

When the cage stopped coming up with men in it, the owners sent down a man from the city in a white coat, with a red sign stitched on his sleeve. He painted it on the pit head gate, that circle with three hooked marks round it like a clock that has lost its hands. The women read it and laughed, because we had signs enough already. Then Ned Fairley came up through the drift with his lamp out and his mouth bleeding into his collar, and he walked straight past his own wife without seeing her.
Old Mother Crane had the answer. She had Ned's brother cut shafts of ash from the hedgerow, and she had the lasses dip jay feathers in woad so they came out blue as the sky over the moor. Three arrows for three sealed doors. Fight the dead, she said, and chalked it on the lamp-room wall, and under it, smaller, fear the living. Nobody asked her why the second line mattered more.
We shot the dead for a fortnight, and they went down easy enough. It was the living who came to the gate with their pockets full and their faces bright, begging to be let in to their mothers. Mother Crane stood in the doorway with a bow in her hands and said no. The arrows are still stuck in the lamp-room wall, Tom. Go and look. The blue has never faded.
