Biohazard and crossed arrows slogan tattoo
Lettering · Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A red biohazard symbol with dripping, blood-like marks sits at the centre of the design, with two arrows with blue fletching passing through it. Black block lettering curves around the symbol, reading Fight the dead along the top and Fear the living along the bottom. The tattoo is shown in close view on pale skin, with the red ink dominant and the black text and blue arrows providing contrast.

The third one through the breach still had its jaw, which meant it had been a farmer's wife until recently. You knew that because Tegan had told you to count the teeth before you loosed, and because you had stopped being able to pretend otherwise somewhere around March. Your arrow took it under the collarbone and it folded over the broken curtain wall like washing.

Below the keep the bailey was rimmed with the mess of the morning: the dogs, the ration cart, the bell rope somebody had strung up to warn the valley, which had rung for three days before the wire gave out. The castle had belonged to a family who once charged tolls on this road. Their name was carved over the gate, half eaten by lichen. Nobody left alive had come to take the stone away, so the castle kept them.
Tegan came up the stair with a sack of bolts and a face like a shut door. 'Eleven at the ford,' she said. 'Hungry or not, they walk in step now.' You fitted a shaft to the string and drew until the fletching touched your cheek. The blue feathers had come from a pheasant Dafydd shot in October, the last thing anybody in this valley had eaten that tasted of something other than fear.
At dusk you counted the arrows left in the quiver: nineteen. You scratched the number into the lintel with a burnt stick, beneath the old family name, the way the others had, and went down to sit with the gate. Fight the dead, Tegan always said. She never said what to do about the ones who still asked you for bread.
