Script lettering with banner on a calf
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of script lettering reads Désolé and Maman, with a third stylised word that appears to be Encore, set on a ribbon banner. Ornamental scrollwork and an ornate letter I with soft shading sit beneath the words. The design fills the lower leg vertically and is centred in the frame.

The first batch is already in the racks when you come through the back door at twenty to five, and your mother is at the bench with flour to her elbows, not looking up. She says nothing about the late bus. She just pushes a bowl of dough towards you with the side of her hand, the way she has since you were tall enough to reach the table, and you know the shape of the morning from that alone.

You shape the batards badly at first, too tight, the seams splitting in the proof. She stops beside you and presses your thumb flat with her own, then scores a neat cut across the top of one loaf and another, quick as a pen. "Désolé," you mutter, because the word is ready in your mouth before the apology is. She laughs through her nose. "Encore," she says. "Again. Every morning, again."
By six the window over the sink has turned from black to the grey of old pewter, and the street is full of delivery vans. Somebody raps on the glass. A man you half remember from school wants a dozen croissants for a christening, and your mother hands him the bag with a wink as if you have been doing this for years.
When the last tray is out you wipe the bench and find, pressed into the flour where her hand rested, the print of her fingers, still sharp at the edges. You leave it there for the morning crowd to step around.
