Colour photo of a black and red tattoo on the inner forearm, showing a pentagram inside a ring with black rays and red drips and splatter.

Pentagram in a black rayed ring with red splatter

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A pentagram sits inside a circular ring, surrounded by a border of black pointed rays that give a sun-like outline. Red linework, splatter and drips run over the black design, with the red partly overlapping the rays and the ring. The tattoo is centred on a pale forearm, with a hand resting at the lower left and dark fabric behind.

The flour is still hanging in the air when you bolt the back door of the bakery on Tanner Street, and the sky over the car park is the colour of weak tea. Nan's tin of red gel food colouring sits beside the scales, the one she swore was only for the iced buns. You have never asked why the oven door has a chalk circle round its handle, or why she drew five points inside it every Friday before the first batch went in.

This morning the dough refuses to rise. Three trays of tin loaves lie flat as biscuits, and the sourdough starter has gone sour in a way Nan would have called a warning. You stand over the bench with your sleeves pushed up and say the thing she used to say, half joking, half not: "Come on, then, morning." Then you take the brush and paint the sigil onto the base of the proving cabinet, the ring, the points, and the spiky rays for the sun to climb through. When the red runs down the wood in drips you let it, because that is how she did it.

At ten to six the window over the sink turns the faintest gold. The loaves in the oven swell and catch, one by one, the way they should. Nobody comes in until seven, so you sit on an upturned flour sack with a cup of stewed tea and watch the shadows of your painted rays sharpen against the wall as the light finds them.

By the time the shutters go up on Tanner Street, the bread is cooling on the racks and the red has dried to a stain you will scrub off tomorrow, or maybe not. You never did learn what the five points were for. You only learned to be up before the light.
