Biohazard emblem on a calf
Other · Mixed · Photo
A bold emblem sits on the calf, with a black biohazard symbol at its centre inside a cross-like shape made of four red and four grey panels. The black linework is solid and the red and grey areas are shaded with soft gradients. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a plain background, with a paper towel and a red cord visible at the edges.

Dear Hal,

The post came up over Kettle Gap on Tuesday, carried by the mule because the lorry would not take the switchbacks after the rain. Inside the oilcloth was the new stamp for the crates, red and grey, with the black three-hooked mark at its middle that you insisted we copy from the old drum labels. I told the carrier it looked like a sweetshop sign. He did not laugh. Nobody laughs at the pass any more.
Since the flood we have logged forty-one sheep carcasses at the lower sheds and sealed the lot in lime. The valley men want the road reopened by the feast of Saint Brendan, and I have told them the gate stays shut until the assay comes back from town. They call me the fussy one. Fine. I would rather be fussy than be the man who waved the mule through.
Yesterday the boy Tomas came up with a scraped wrist and a grin, asking whether the stamp could be put on his arm. He had watched the crates being painted. I said the stamp belongs on crates, and he said that was exactly why he wanted it, so nobody could ever mistake him for a crate. I sent him down with a flask of brandy and a warning.
I am writing this by the stove with the window open a crack so the air keeps moving. If the assay is clean, send word by the Thursday mule and I will light the signal fire on the ridge. If it is not, burn this letter and do not come up the pass.
Yours in lime and caution, Ansel
