Nine-pointed star in a circle on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A nine-pointed star, formed by lines that cross the interior, sits inside a thin circle. The linework is black with a solid red fill or outline around the black lines, set on lightly haired skin. The design is centred in the frame against a plain background with dark clothing at the bottom edge.

Pell had been told twice by the bosun that the galley slate was for the menu and nothing else, so she waited until the cook had gone up for the evening muster before she chalked the circle. Her hand was steady from years of cutting bread on a moving deck. The ring came out true. The nine points were harder, and she kept losing count at the fifth.

Cook Harrow had said it could not be done in one stroke. He had said it over a pot of barley, with the flat certainty of a man who had never been proved wrong about anything smaller than the sea. Pell had told him a line did not care who was certain. She set the chalk on the rim, counted off three points, and drew across the circle to the far mark, then the next, skipping two each time, the way you would lay out a row of pegs along a rail.
The chalk squeaked. Somewhere above, the wind shifted the mainsail and the lamp swung, so the shadows of the cups on their hooks slid across the figure and back again. She did not look up. Each crossing line met the one before it inside the ring, and the star closed on itself without a break, nine tips reaching out like the fingers of a hand held flat under water.
When Harrow came down the ladder he stopped at the foot of it and read the slate for a long time. Then he took the cloth from its hook, wiped away the menu, and handed her the chalk. "Again," he said, "and this time colour it in," and he reached past her for the jar of pickled beetroot.
