Fox and wolf full sleeve with branches

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo of a red-orange fox leaping among bare branches, with a grey wolf below and wisps of linework rising through the design. The bold black outlines sit over soft blended shading in teal, blue and pink that fades into a galaxy-like background. The sleeve wraps the arm, and the same arm appears repeated in several overlapping copies across the frame.

The canvas had torn along the seam above the ring, and by dawn the rain had turned the sawdust to grey porridge. Ada Penhallow stood at the flap with a bucket of cold tea, counting the cages the way her father used to count coins, and found the fox cage empty. The latch hung open and the wire dangled like a snapped thread.

Her wolf, Samson, was still asleep in the straw of the last wagon, grey as old cinders, one ear flicking toward the hedge. She had no time for sentiment. The show owed three towns and a bank manager in Shrewsbury wanted his money by Friday. Still she took the lantern and the wolf's lead and walked out past the caravans, where the field met a line of bare ash trees that looked, in that half-light, like they were holding their breath.

Beyond the hedge the sky was thick with stars, the kind that never reached the town. Between two trunks she saw a flash of rust, then another, the fox climbing a branch and crossing it in one bound, paws finding wood no sensible creature would trust. Samson lifted his head and gave a low note. The fox stopped, looked back down with its narrow face, and for a moment Ada could not tell which of them was the trained animal.

She set the lantern on a stump and sat in the wet grass. "Go on, then," she said. The fox leapt again and was gone into the dark between the stars. Samson lay down beside her and rested his chin on her boot. She unhooked the lead and let it fall. The tickets could wait until morning, and the crowd would be smaller, but she found she did not mind.
