Ringed planet and moons on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A ringed planet with a smaller cratered moon dominates the arm, set among scattered stars and glowing specks of light. Pine trees and bare branches run along the lower left edge, adding depth to the night sky scene. The work is entirely black and grey, with soft gradients, fine speckling and sharp highlights on the rings, photographed on a pale surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Bramleys were meant to be off the trees by dusk, but the wasps had got into the windfalls, so your uncle sent you up the orchard with a torch and a bucket anyway. By the third row the kitchen lights had dropped behind the hedge, and the only thing above you was Saturn, low over the pines on the hill, its ring tilted like a cup someone had set down at an angle.

Your grandfather used to say the planet was a gardener's joke, a loop of rope left on a hook. You never believed him. You knelt in the wet grass and counted apples into the bucket, and every time you lost your place you looked up again. The small cratered moon hung just below the ring as if it had been dropped there by accident, and the stars around it seemed to tremble whenever the wind moved the branches.

Then the torch died. In the dark the planet grew brighter, and the stars spread across the field like spilt flour. Down at the gate the latch rattled, and a voice you knew called your name twice, not cross, only tired. You thought about the bucket, still half empty, and the wasps, and how little the orchard needed you to finish.

You stood, lifted the bucket, and walked down between the trees toward the lit window, leaving the ring to hang over the rows where it had been all along, patient as a clock nobody winds.
