Birch trees and red birds on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large sleeve tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing tall birch-like trees with fine branches and grass at the base. The trees are rendered in soft black and grey shading, set against pink and brown clouds with bold red birds flying across the shoulder. The composition wraps around the arm, with the trunks running vertically and the sky fading into the background.

The bird came down on the third morning of the thaw, when the birches along the Hallow beck were still bare and grey, and Ida Corran was already halfway up the slope with a bucket of sap on her hip. It was a red bird, redder than any robin, and it settled on the lowest branch of the tallest tree and looked at her the way a steward looks at a tenant who is late with the rent.

Her grandmother had told her about the red birds. They came with the spring clouds, pink as the underside of a salmon, and they flew only where someone was owed something in the wood. You did not chase them. You followed them, slowly, and you did not speak until they stopped.
So Ida set down the bucket and followed. The bird went from tree to tree, always one trunk ahead, until the grass gave way to black peat and the pale stems stood close as the bars of a gate. At the last birch it waited. Under its roots lay a tin box no bigger than a loaf, rusted through at one corner, and inside were three coins and a folded note in her grandfather's hand, promising a sack of seed barley to a neighbour who had died before the harvest.
She carried the box down the hill that afternoon and gave the coins to the neighbour's daughter, who cried, then laughed, then asked why Ida had come all that way on a day with so much rain in the sky. Ida only said the birds had been busy. Over the valley the clouds turned the colour of old brick, and the red birds lifted off the branches one by one and went home.
