Large botanical tattoo across a back showing a grey tree with pink blossom, red falling leaves and a red anatomical heart among the roots.

Blossom tree and anatomical heart on a back

Botanical · Back · Mixed · Photo

A large tree with pink blossom spreads across the upper back, its grey trunk curving down to exposed roots that wrap around a realistic red heart at the base. Red leaves drift diagonally from the crown toward the lower back, shaded to look three-dimensional. The black and grey trunk and branches contrast with the warm red and pink colours, and the design fills the full width of the back against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The boats came home on the ebb that year with nothing in their nets but weed, so the women of Skerry Cove climbed the headland to ask the old blossom tree what it wanted. Nobody had planted it. It had come up out of the rock the winter the first boat was lost, and every spring since it had flowered pink over the cliff path, and every autumn it dropped its red leaves seaward like coins thrown to a ferryman.

Maren Holt, who mended the nets and had buried two husbands to the sea, knelt among the roots with a knife and began to dig. Under the stones she found a heart. It was not a bird's or a seal's. It was the size of a fist, dark red, and still faintly warm when she lifted it into her apron. The roots had grown around it like fingers around a cup. The women carried it down to the harbour wall and argued all afternoon about what to do with it.

Old Tobiah said it should go back where it came from. His daughter said the sea had been fed enough. In the end Maren walked back up in the dusk and set the heart between the roots again, pressed the earth down with her palm, and said the thing her mother had said to her, which was only that the boats would come home when the tree was done flowering.

The next morning the nets were heavy. The tree dropped its leaves that week the way it always had, drifting down the slope in a long slant, and nobody in Skerry Cove ever again asked it for anything. They swept the path, counted the boats going out, and counted them coming in.
