Red poppies and birds on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows three red poppies on curved stems, with two black birds in flight, one large and one small. The birds have detailed feather shading in black and grey, while the poppies use layered reds with soft, blended edges that fade into a smoky red wash. The design wraps diagonally across the outer thigh, with the poppies and birds balanced around the centre of the leg.

The lift on the fourth floor has been out since Tuesday, so you take the stairs at ten past three with a tray of paper cups and a chart you have already read twice. Mrs Okonedo in bed nine has asked for the window to be opened, and you have told her, twice, that the window does not open. Beyond it the car park lamps turn everything the colour of weak tea.

Something knocks against the glass at half past. You expect a moth, but it is a crow on the sill, one wing held out wrong, grey grit caught in the feathers at its throat. It regards you with the flat patience of someone waiting for a bus. When you come back with a towel it has gone, and in its place a single red petal is stuck to the outside of the pane, thin as tissue, bright as a cut.
Dani from the health care team swears it was her gran's poppies, the ones in the front garden she cut down for a funeral last summer, pressed in a Bible she never opens. You don't believe her and you don't argue. At four Mrs Okonedo wakes and asks what colour the sky is. Black, you tell her, though there is a thin wash of red beginning behind the bypass. Her father used to say poppies came up first on ground that had been burned, she says, and then she sleeps again with her hand open on the blanket.
At five you lift the blind and two birds cross the lamplight, one big and one small, heading east toward the hills. You write the time on the chart in neat capitals, then, because nobody will check, you draw a poppy in the margin: three curves for the stem, a red blot, and a black mark where the wind went through it.
