Bird and pansy flash design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette of a small perched bird sits beside a plus sign and a pansy flower with a filled centre, all on a plain cream background. The bird is drawn with simple solid shapes and cut-out detail, while the flower uses a bold outline with a dark centre. The composition is small and centred with plenty of empty space around the motifs.

The reunion was set for the Saturday after the harvest supper, and by Wednesday nobody in Holm Cross could agree on who would bring the urn of tea. Miss Ada Fenwick had taught all of them in the one room above the chapel, and she had died the winter before with a jar of pennies still on her windowsill, labelled in her square hand for the class that had sat under her. The jar was meant for the reunion. Nobody had thought to count it.

Tom Ashby, who had once thrown a slate at the vicar's cat, arrived first with a spade. He said the jar was buried under the pansy bed behind the chapel, because Miss Fenwick had told him so the day he left school, and that she had never once told a child a lie. They dug in the wet grass with their coats off, the women holding lanterns and the men arguing about depth. At two feet the spade rang on glass.
Inside there were no pennies. There was a folded paper with a plus sign drawn on it, a small bird with its tail up on one side, and a pansy with a dark heart on the other. Underneath, in the square hand, it said that heartsease belonged to those who stayed and the robin belonged to those who went, and that a person needed both before they could find their way home.
Nobody laughed. Mrs Pell, who had sat at the back and never spoken in class, said quietly that she had always thought the bird was the one who ought to have stayed. They filled the hole again and left the empty jar on the chapel step, and by morning someone had set a pansy in it.
