Three hummingbirds in flight
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows three solid black silhouettes of hummingbirds, each with a long beak, outstretched wings and a forked tail, arranged in a loose triangle. The silhouettes have smooth, filled outlines with no internal linework or shading. The plain white background leaves the composition open and the shapes are the only elements in the frame.

The road over Hartsop Fell shut on the Tuesday, and by Thursday there were four of us at the Crown with nothing to do but eat Mrs Bell's mutton and wait for the men with the plough. Nobody had booked the back room, but Mrs Bell had aired it anyway, because she said a snowed-in house ought to have a spare bed the way a clock ought to have a spare key.

The room held a shoebox of black card birds that her husband Tom had cut out the winter before he died. There were three, each the size of a man's hand, with needle beaks and forked tails, glued to lengths of bent wire. He used to hang them in the front window so carters coming up in fog could find the lamp. Mrs Bell said the birds had never once been needed, because the carters always knew the way, but she kept them anyway, the way people keep things they have told themselves they will use.
On the fifth night the wind dropped and I found her at the window with the birds in her hands, turning them one by one until their beaks pointed at the door. "Tom always said they'd fly if the drift got high enough," she said. I laughed, and she didn't, and I stopped. Outside, the moon lay on the snow like pressed paper, and nothing moved on the lane.
In the morning the plough came grinding up from the valley and we dug out the step together, passing the shovel between us. Before I climbed into the cab I looked back through the glass. The three birds were hanging in the front window, all facing the same way, towards the road that would let us go.
