The rain has got into the stall again, Tom, so the bench smells of wet cardboard and oil. I've moved the good watches under the awning and left the brass ones to fend for themselves. Mrs Okafor from the fish end says the market will be rained off till Saturday, which means nobody buys anything and everybody talks.

You asked in your last letter whether the swifts still come back to the church roof. They do, though later each year. Yesterday one dropped out of the grey like a stone, wings folded tight, straight past the gutter and down towards the drain grate, and I thought, that's it, that's Dad's bird gone. Then it opened out a yard above the cobbles and went up again over the bell tower. You'd have laughed at my face. Mrs Okafor did.

I've kept the old repeater Dad left us, the one with the beaded chain that snapped in '87. I finally had the chain re-strung by the man on Cathedral Row, who charged me four pounds and told me the links were older than the watch. It hangs now on the hook by the window, lid open, face to the street, and whatever the weather does it keeps time. I'm going to take it down to the stall on Saturday and see who stops to look at it.
