Iceberg split at the waterline on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of an iceberg divided by a horizontal waterline, with jagged peaks above and a submerged mass below. Both halves are built from dense black contour lines, with the underwater section shaded in a swirling, wood-grain pattern. A thin blue line marks the waterline, and the design sits flat against the forearm in a single close-up view.

Dear Tomasz,

The bank man came again on Tuesday with his brown folder under his arm, and I did what you taught me. I stood him at the edge of the ring where the lights hit the sawdust and let him look at the top of things: the spangled tent, the flyers in the Co-op window, the two Shetland ponies doing their waltz. He wrote something down and nodded like a man admiring an iceberg from a deckchair. He had no idea what the old wagons were doing under the boards.

Because you know what's under there. The ring rests on the wagon bed your father built, and every winter the damp has gone into the grain of those planks, lifting them into the same whorls you see on the chestnut beam in the barn. Nobody pays to look at that. They pay for the high wire, which hangs from rope I replaced last month with money we did not have.

Last night Mrs Kettering's boy asked why the elephant was painted grey when she is clearly brown. I told him the paint was for the people in the back seats. He laughed. Then he asked whether the water was cold under the stage, and I said yes, very.

The shows go on through the autumn, if the ponies hold. I am writing this at the trestle table with the lamp turned low so the tent does not glow for the council man on the lane. Come home before the frost. Bring the good saw. The planks want replacing and I cannot do it alone.

Love, Ruth
