Bird and yellow flowers on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A songbird with a grey and red-tipped wing sits on a branch with several yellow and orange flowers and dark green leaves. The bold black outlines are filled with solid colour, with stippled dots shading the bird's chest and soft gradients in the leaves. The design wraps diagonally across the upper arm and the subject fills most of the frame.

The snow had sealed the Hollin Gate road for three days, and Maud Pelling counted the coins in the till twice before she let herself look at the bird. It had come in through the scullery window on the second morning, a songbird with a grey back and rust-red tips to its wings, and it sat now on the rim of the copper pan as if it had paid for the room.

Her brother Tom said it would starve before the thaw. He said it with his boots on the fender and a pint of the last barrel at his elbow, the way he had said everything since the carrier stopped coming. Maud took a stoneware jug from the windowsill, filled it, and set three marigolds from the pots by the back door in the water, though they were already drooping and it was foolish to spend the warmth on them.
On the fourth morning the sky over the moor went the colour of pewter and the drifts began to sink. Tom found the bird on the sill beside the jug, feathers puffed against the cold, and said nothing. Maud shook a pinch of seed from the bottom of the sack onto the ledge and went back to the bar to pour for the men who had walked up from the village.
When the carrier's horses came up the lane at noon, the bird was gone. The marigolds stood in their jug, petals bright as coins, and beside the crumbs lay a single red-tipped feather. Maud tucked it inside the ledger, at the page where the snowbound guests were written, and left the flowers where they were.
