Blue flowers and paisley on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A large paisley design of two blue-shaded flowers, leaves and curling scrolls runs along the forearm. The paisley bodies are filled with fine dots and small scale-like patterns, while the outlines and flower centres use bold black linework. The flowers are softly shaded in blue and teal against an otherwise black and grey design, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark background.

Nessa Coulson had the third shawl across her knees when the pit buzzer went for the day shift, and she still hadn't decided about the blue. Ruth from the chapel committee had sent the first two back with the same note pinned to them. Too bright for a funeral, it said, in pencil, as if Nessa had been asking for flowers at all.

The wool had come from the mill at Kessock, dyed indigo in the wash-house copper the way her mother had done it, and the teal she had worked up herself from a jar of powdered bluebell root that Tom swore was no good for anything. Tom was on the back shift at Hollin Drift. He came up the lane at six with coal in the creases of his neck, and he sat on the step to watch her pick out a single paisley scroll with the tip of a darning needle.

'Leave it,' he said. 'Who's going to sit under it, Ruth or the dead?' She laughed, and the laugh surprised her. She had spent forty years making things grey enough to be decent. The blue flowers were the first thing she had made that looked like it wanted to be seen from the road.

She wrote one word on the card, Keep, and pinned it to the shawl's corner. Down the valley the buzzer sounded again, the long one that meant the cage was coming up, and Nessa bit off the thread and waited for the lamps to come over the rise.
