Hummingbird and blue flower on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A green hummingbird with a red throat hovers beside a large blue flower with yellow stamens, set on the outer thigh. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading define the bird's wings and the flower's layered petals, and yellow and green tendrils curl around both to frame the composition. The colour ink is vivid and saturated against the skin, with the design filling the upper and mid thigh.

Mind your feet on the step, because the boards have been soft since the rain, and I'll tell this only the once. The Maddox Travelling Wonders were already halfway to the knacker's yard the autumn Oriel Penhale bought a ruby-throated bird off a sailor in Hull for two shillings and a bag of sugar. Nobody thought it would last the winter. It was too small to be a proper wonder, the ringmaster said, and too fond of one thing to be any use.

That one thing was a blue flower. Oriel had grown it in a clay pot on the wagon step, a great velvet bloom with a crown of yellow stamens that she watered from a tin cup every morning. The little bird would come down out of the drizzle and hang there, wings going so fast you could hardly see them, and drink from the crown while the rest of the company stood in the mud counting what was left of the takings.

By February the ringmaster had sold the elephant to a zoo in Leeds and the horses to a man in Wakefield, and the wagons were bound for scrap. A collector from London offered forty pounds for the bird, and Oriel took the money before he had finished his sentence. Then she walked him to the gate, opened the wire door of the cage, and watched the ruby-throat go straight back past her shoulder to the blue flower on the step. The man stood there holding an empty cage, and the bird hung over the pot, wings blurring, drinking from the yellow crown as if nobody had ever told it the show was over.
