Trumpet inside a treble clef on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded trumpet sits inside an ornate treble clef, with the valves and tubing rendered in fine detail. The linework is clean and the grey shading builds metallic highlights on the instrument and soft curls on the clef. The tattoo is centred on a smooth upper arm against a dark background.

The echo came back from the far wall a half-beat late, so Hettie learned to play ahead of it. Nobody in Marrowby had told her that a ruined keep was the worst place in Northumberland to practise a trumpet, and nobody had needed to. The walls gave back every wrong note with interest, and the wind through the arrow slits hummed underneath like a sustained chord she could not tune.

Her uncle Ray had left the instrument to her in a biscuit tin with a grey cloth and a note: keep the valves oiled, keep the crook clean, and never play it on the castle green in February. She had done two of the three. The clef was the part she could not stop looking at, because the old bandmaster had drawn one on the back of every rehearsal sheet, its tail curling down into the bottom staff like a fern unrolling.

On the Thursday the cold got into her lips and she missed the top G for the fourth time. She lowered the trumpet and watched her breath rise past the broken window of the chapel. Somebody below the wall was whistling the same phrase, badly, and she recognised the wrong note at once because she had been making it all afternoon.

She climbed down and found a boy of about nine sitting on a fallen capital with a tin whistle. She handed him the mouthpiece. "Blow like you mean to be heard," she said. He did. The keep took the note and sent it back to them both, perfectly in tune, and for once Hettie did not try to fix it.
