Bird silhouette with 'don't just fly... soar' script

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black silhouette of a bird with spread wings sits to the left of the words 'don't just fly...' and 'soar' in a thin, flowing script. The artwork is solid black on a plain white background, with the bird as a bold filled shape and the lettering in fine, uniform strokes. The composition places the bird low and left, with the text rising across the upper right.

Sit closer, you with the wet sandals, and mind the brazier. No, the bird is not the hero here, the bird is the warning. Listen. In the hill country above Sardis there was a swift called Kerris who had learned to flit. She could cross the valley in a hundred little darts, from fig to wall to thorn, and the goatherds said she was the quickest thing they had ever seen. She was proud of it. Every dawn she went out and flicked, and every dusk she came home with her wings aching and nothing to show for it.

Then one spring a grey vulture came up the river wind, and it did not flap once. It lifted its wings wide, tipped them, and the air simply carried it past the cliffs. Kerris watched from her fig tree until her beak hung open. "How?" she cried. The vulture circled, looked down at her with no pity at all, and said, "You spend yourself on every small gust. Find one great column of warm air, open your wings to it, and let the mountain lift you."

Kerris did not believe it, but she was tired of being tired. The next morning she waited until the sun had warmed the rocks, found the rising air above the goat track, and spread her wings. The ground fell away beneath her. By midday she was a speck over the sea, and the goatherds below had to shade their eyes to find her.

Down in the valley they still say a swift will beat its wings until it drops, while the vulture hardly seems to hurry at all.
