Fairy silhouette with butterfly wings

Black and grey · Flash

A solid black silhouette of a winged fairy shown mid-flight in profile, with one arm extended and legs trailing behind. The large wings have fine parallel veining with segmented panels, drawn as open outlines against the white background. The image is entirely black ink on white, with no shading or greys, and the figure sits centrally with plenty of empty space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The miller's daughter at Carrow Fell had wings the colour of a bruise going yellow, and her mother kept them hidden under a grey shawl until the spring the river rose over the weir. Nobody in the village could mend the sluice gate but her, for she could fly up under the timbers where a man's arms would not fit and tie the rotted rope in knots that held. Three nights she went out in the wet dark and came back with her hair full of river weed and her wings torn at the veins.

On the fourth night the wind changed and the water stopped climbing. The miller stood on the bank with a lantern and asked her what she wanted for it. She said she wanted only the old tin mirror that hung behind the door, the one her grandmother had carried over the hills from the south, and he laughed and gave it to her before the words were out of his mouth, because he had never once thought of it as worth keeping.

She took the mirror down to the sluice that night and held it up to the moon so she could see her own back. The wings were not torn at all. They were only mapped in the light, panel after panel of fine lines, every one of them folding into the next the way the river folds into a pool. She was not a girl with a broken pair. She had only forgotten how far she could go on them, and she flew out over the fells before the lantern had gone cold.
