Black and grey · Flash

A solid black silhouette of a swallow with its wings swept back and its forked tail extended, shown in side view and angled diagonally across the frame. The shape has no internal linework or shading, so the feather detail is shown only through the edges of the wings and tail. The image is black on a plain white background with generous margins, in a flash-style presentation.

The bird had come aboard in the night, a swallow so worn its tail looked like two torn sail-cloths, and it had wedged itself between the spice tins as if it owned the place. By the time the loaves were out and cooling on the rack, the swallow had hopped to the rim of the sugar bin and was watching the captain's cabin door through the bulkhead with the air of a clerk waiting for a late pay packet.

The mate came down for his tea and swore. Half the crew said the bird was a sign of bad weather, the other half said it was a sign of good, and the boy who scrubbed pots said it was just lost and hungry. Tomasz broke off a corner of the warm crust, crumbled it on the sill, and went back to his pans.

When the swallow finally lifted, it did not fly for the hatch. It went straight up through the galley skylight, as if it had only wanted to be let out the right way. Tomasz watched it climb until it was a dark nick against the cloud, then wiped the flour from his hands and wrote in the log that the bread had come out well.
