Bird with HOPE banner painted on canvas

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A painted canvas shows a stylised teal and pink swallow with outstretched wings, holding a grey banner lettered with the word HOPE. The bird has bold dark outlines and a glossy highlight on its eye, in a classic traditional tattoo style. The background is a soft yellow and grey pattern, and the canvas is photographed straight on against a wooden floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are sixteen and the rain has got into the workshop again, so Dorrie Vance hangs the canvas over the stove to dry and tells you to stop fussing over the wing. Saltwick runs on boats and shopfronts, and most of your summer has gone on sailors' names for transoms and the chemist's faded gilt. Nobody asks for birds, except the odd lad home from National Service with a swallow in his head and a shilling in his pocket.

This one is for the window of the tobacconist on Anchor Street. Dorrie sketches the banner herself, a grey ribbon curling under the bird's breast, and sets you to lettering it. HOPE, in capitals, each stroke shaded so the word looks cut into the wood rather than painted on it. Your hand shakes on the second O. She says nothing, only scrapes the wet paint off with her thumb and makes you start again.

By Friday the teal has dried into the feathers and the pink along the underwing is almost right. The eye is the last job. Dorrie tells you a bird without a shine in its eye looks dead on the wall, so she takes the brush from you and puts one small white dot in the corner, quick as a breath. Then she steps back and says that will do.

On Monday you carry the canvas down in brown paper, and the bell over the tobacconist's door rings as you lift it into the window. Across the road a woman in a black coat stops, reads the banner twice with her lips moving, and walks on without buying anything. You watch until she turns the corner. Dorrie is already back inside, mixing the grey.
