Sit closer, the lot of you, the stove's near out and I'll not tell this twice. My grandmother's grandfather farmed the low land under Carrow Fen, where the dyke freezes so hard the ducks walk across it like bishops. In the winter of the great frost a swan came down on the flood water by the sluice gate. Nobody had seen a swan that far inland in forty years.

Her name was Thessaly Hale, and she had a neck like a question mark and a wing that folded into rows of leaves, every feather cut with curls, the way frost cuts a window. The men wanted to shoot her for the sport of it. Thessaly's brother Abel had a dog called Mother and a debt to the bank at Wyke. He went down to the water at dusk with the gun and stood there a long while, the cold coming up through his boots, listening to her sing a low note like a bellows being slowly pressed.
He did not fire. He came home with his hands red and said nothing. In the morning the sluice had opened on its own, the dyke was clear, and the swan was gone. On the ice where she had sat lay a single long feather, curled at the tip like a scroll. By spring the wheat in the north field had come up thick as a fist. The bank at Wyke sent its letter again that March, and Abel put it in the stove.
So if you go walking Carrow Fen this January and see a bird with its neck bent in the shape of a letter you never learned to read, don't reach for anything. Just nod to her and go home. That's the whole of it, and the stove's out, so mind the door on your way.
