Draped classical figure with flowering stem
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A draped female figure in classical dress, shown from behind and turned slightly to one side, stands beside a tall, slender stem bearing small five-petalled flowers and buds. The figure is rendered with soft grey shading and fine outlines, with the folds of the fabric carefully modelled. The composition is vertical, with the figure on the left and the plant running up the right side against plain pale skin.

The statue came with the house, which is what Mrs Pell told every lodger who asked why a bare-footed woman in a sheet stood in the back yard of Gull Rise among the bins. A sculptor had left her there in 1869 against a debt he never settled, and she was not for sale, whatever the men from the marble yard said when they came with their ladders and their long faces.

Every April a stalk came up beside her, thin as a knitting needle, with small five-petalled flowers and buds like pinched fingers. Mrs Pell cut it for the parlour vases and it grew back by morning. The lodgers said it was the damp. Mr Gage, who sold fire insurance and counted his coins twice, said it was a trick of the cement.
The summer Mr Gage fell behind with his rent, he took a cold chisel from his sample case and went out after the tea things were cleared. He worked until the moon was over the chimneys. In the morning the stem stood taller than the wall, every bud open, and a single white flower lay on the step with the dust of his chisel still on its petals.
He was gone by Friday, and his room was paid to the day. Mrs Pell found the money laid in a neat pile on the windowsill, and when she went out to the yard the statue's hand was closed around the stem as if it had been holding it all along. Nobody in the house ever saw the woman's face, only her back, and the flowers she kept turning towards the sea.
