Lace-style floral design drawn on paper
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a branching floral arrangement with large petal-like shapes, open flower heads and curling stems, filled with fine lattice and lace-like patterning. The lines are dark black ink on a light paper surface, with a faint traced outline of a second design visible behind the sheet. The composition runs diagonally from the lower left to the upper right, with a marker pen resting across the top edge.

The old pricking had come through the vellum overnight, a ghost of holes showing where someone had once pinned the design, and Hester Vane spent the whole of Tuesday deciding whether to trust it. Her mother had always said a lace pattern was a promise you made to a stranger. You could not see the stranger. You could only follow the pins.

The pattern belonged to the Widow Marl, who had worked at the cottage on Cuckoo Lane until her eyes went. Hester had found the sheet folded inside a hymnbook. It showed a bloom with petals like cupped hands, a stem that curled back on itself twice before it gave up, and two open flowers leaning towards each other across a gap of fine net. Every ground stitch was a little island, and every island had to be joined or the whole thing came apart on the cushion.
By Thursday she had pinned three hundred and twelve points and her thumbs were raw from the bobbins. She stopped at the curl of the stem, where the old hand had lifted its pins and left a gap no wider than a thread. Hester laid the hook in the gap and waited. Then she tied the last cross of the ground, and the flower lay flat and whole on the cushion, the two heads turned towards each other as if they had only paused mid-sentence.
